The new album by Dame Shirley Bassey, “The Performance”, features a spectacular new song written specially for her by Richard Hawley titled “After The Rain”.

Richard said – “To be asked to contribute a song to Shirley’s album is an honour and also a difficult task as well. I decided to contribute a slow ballad instead of a big show tune or anything too bombastic. The song is about the clarity you can get after a storm, it’s a very simple song but Shirley has given a lot to the song I didn’t know was there before, it’s a great honour for me and something I won’t forget.”

“After The Rain” finds Dame Shirley singing with a vulnerability and subtlety that will surprise everyone.  In the words of the Dame, “I think people are going to be confused by it, they’ll say ‘Where did these notes come from?’ because they all associate me with the big voice, but there’s a control on this record that’s incredible.”

Richard will also be playing on the same bill as Dame Shirley this week at The Roundhouse as part of the bbc electric proms which will be broadcast soon.

Other songwriters on the album include Rufus Wainwright, John Barry and KT Tunstall. It was produced by David Arnold and is released on 9th November.
