Huge thanks Richard for bringing your band to Milton Keynes! I had to write to try to express what a spellbinding, moving and incredible performance you gave us at The Stables last night. Considering the standing ovation at the end I think I'm on safe grounds to assume I wasn't the only one to have been awe struck at the talent and energy at a gig of yours and I'm certain this is normal so I hope to see more of your gigs over the years, in the meantime I'm off to buy more of your albums to relive your beautiful voice and music. Hi, came to see Richard and the boys at The Stables Milton Keynes last night with my old chap! 2nd row from the front. Awesome is not a word that is normally in my vocabulary, but I cant think of a better word to desribe how I felt about last night. I have the whole back catalogue loaded on to my iPod for when I go on holiday.....the man is pure genius. Having a debilitating illness means that I have to take time out during the day to meditate, 'The Ocean' is on continous play, it makes my whole body relax and just drift away, and I cant thank you enough for that. Please please please do more gigs......wishing you all you wish for yourself x " I love you just because..........."

Great performance at The Stables last night - you did us proud. Good to hear 'Serious' after so long. Whilst The Teddyboy's Picnic could not be beaten for atmosphere, this gig was great as we could really appreciate how well you and the band played and could see all your wonderful guitars. Shame you had to waste a roast chicken dinner on the faces of the hecklers! Diane and Jim

Dear Richard Hawley, My mom died recently from cancer, and I was willing to talk about it with you, and about how helpful your songs were to me. I can't really describe how your songs worked on me, and I can't tell you why they touched me so much, but they used to inspire hope as I was listening to them, and you have no idea how I love listening and singing them now that she's gone, today more than ever. I wanted to contact you in a different way, like sending you a letter or something, but I have contacted Alias productions, which is managing your concerts in France, and they told me this guest book was the only way to get in touch with you. All I desire now is that you read this words, just so that you can know now that no other artist touched me like you, and that you're the most talented musician that I have ever heard. Richard, it was one of the swellest gigs we have experienced. The vibe was fab, the setting excellent, the acts super and Richard, you were just perfect. I really hope that you make this an annual event. By the way, your music sometimes sounds like a perfect civil partnership of Nick Drake and Bill Nelson (two heroes of my youth). Richard you are a special man indeed. The gig at Bushey Heath Farm was spectacular - I enjoyed every moment of the music and also Ian Chapman's reading from his excellent book. You might have a chuckle about the fact that those of us camping got rather wet the next day and we also headed south on our motorbike without waterproofs - that's soft southerners for you! Hi all, Got back from the teddy boys picnic in the small hours of this morning after lifting the kids from the comfort of their grans bed!, boy were we in trouble!, ya see we had told the kids we wouldn`t be back late, as we had wrongly thought RH was on at 3pm, ooops! grounded for a month! Anyway WHATEVER!!!!!....me and our Maude (Helen really) landed early and managed to ride the uneven ground sheet rite`t front centre of stage where we stayed all neet, sept for goin for a pee!, Anyroad, what a magnificent musical experience it proved to be, first up the superb Neil McSweeney, who held his nerve better than onto his guitar lead only to recover with masterful timing. Next the Brilliant, Lost(everley)brothers, whose beautiful harmonies managed to soothe the concern I had held for mcsweeneys neighbours car. Up stepped the immaculately dressed Pete Molinari who was able to fend off the advances of our maude like a true Matador and thats no BULL.what a voice!! Next a pair (or was it chior) of Angels going by the name of smoke fairies , godsent. Nowthen, if all that wasn`t enough we were introduced to a pair of legends who reminded me how wonderful life is when they're in this world. when norma first sang , RH appeared on the wings,as if ready to hand over the billing before leaving breifly, only to return with the speed of a paramedic once Mr Clayton had advised that their second song was to be dedicated to him. I don`t think richard ever cleared the lump from his throat all night , but then neither did anyone! ..... long live the queen of robin hoods bay! With legs now acheing the time read ten past nine so for six hours we had stood waiting for the spectacle that was about to deliver its genious.Richard and the boys played a heartfelt set which was no more illustrated when just before the crescendo of 'soldier on' impatient voices from within the crowd implored Richard to 'go on ' which then almost lifted the roof off the barn.If there was to be a heaven we were all going , there and then, each clutching our working class hands. For that moment nothing else mattered. On our journey home,I reflected on our experience and what a pleasure it had been and how I had momentarily toyed with the idea of taking Mr Clayton and his family home having been left stranded in buxton. Earlier he had very kindly signed his book I had purchased and during that journey home I found it to have been placed directly underneath his dedication to his own family. To paraphrase the title of Ian's book, this brought the whole experience home,it was about the spirit and generosity of people and our desire to feel truly connected.I think Richard was right when he said 'something has happened tonight' . Respect to all those involved in making this experience possible and those fortunate to share it.

Hello , i?m a 21-year-old French fan, and I attended your concert at the Bataclan last night and I just wanted to tell you it was great. As you told it, it is very important for you to have the recognition of french people (even if we still are snails :) ). Well don't worry, you got dithyrambic critics from majors cultural newspapers like "les inrockuptibles" ( http://www.lesinrocks.com/musique/musique-article/t/1265882641/article/an-evening-with-richard-howley/) or "rock and folk" (http://www.rocknfolk.com/site/disquedumois.php?dumo_id=2690) or in "le Monde" which is the french equivalent of "the times" . Really hope you're gonna become as big in France as you are in England, you deserve it . Sheffield rules. yours ps: the next time you come in Paris ( unfortunately i can't see you in Lyon ), please can you sing "baby you're my light", "just like the rain" and "i sleep alone" (this one in particular is fucking great) which are my personal favourites ? Don't decive yourself; i love "truelove's gutter" ("ashes on the fire" ... how can a song be that moving?) but "coles corner" still has a special place in my heart. pps: excuse my english.

Hi, Richard, might sound funny, but I only ?discovered? you as a solo-artist some weeks ago ? and I was stunned and blown away instantly from what I?ve heard! Since then, I just can?t stop listening to your music; I was and still am so touched by your voice, your guitar, your lyrics, the way your songs are arranged, that sometimes it brings tears to my eyes, I have to admit! I just LOVE ?Trueloves Gutter?; it?s so deep, so earnest, with such a melancholic but still soothing tone in each of your songs. Thanks a lot, Richard, I can only thank you so much for what you gave to me (and still do!). Your music tells stories and offers comfort, feeling, belief, sadness, without being depressing, it?s so honest, tender, understanding, yes, that?s how I feel about it. And you really helped me to get through some really hard time with your music. Another step towards getting better was taking up guitar playing (I bought an electric guitar some time ago) after a very long time of not having played at all, and I just love it, it was the best thing I ever did! It?s so good that I came across your music just now because I would very much like to ?produce? some of your hauntingly beautiful sound on guitar ? hope I?ll succeed! I?m practicing eagerly each day and it just feels great and satisfying, that?s for sure! When I read that you also come to Cologne in May, my heart jumped and I was going down town immediately to get a ticket for your concert on coming Friday ? I?m really looking forward to seeing and listening to you, I can?t tell you how much! Hope you?ll also play some of your older songs (like ?Black Train?, ?Coles Corner? or ?The only road? ? will you?). Anyway, I?ll be a true fan of yours from now on; after having listened to all of your CDs I just cannot think of one song that didn?t reach me! Although I?ve long passed teenager times your music makes me feel like one again, true! Thanks again, Richard, and I wish you all the success you deserve like no other musician at present ? and I?m sure your fan-base in Germany will have grown after your concerts! With lots of affection from Cologne, Gabriele

Hey Rich, got into your music a number of years ago now and had some tickets purchased for a manchester gig for my birthday from the other half.A night away from the kids,we enjoyed a fantastic intimate performance and returned to the sombre hotel literally buzzing with enthusiasm.Whilst we were sat in the foyer bar at about 1 0'clock in the morning in walked your support band at the time ,Vincent Vincent and the Villains with whom we enjoyed a drink and a chat until the small hours.A truly fantastic evening.By the way did your mother ever meet Jim Reeves on Coles Corner,as your music today takes me back to my days as a young lad in Salford when his music , offered the kind of comfort only family or loved one can provide. Please dont tell me the tickets for the Teddy Boys Picnic are sold out as its the other halfs Birthday on the 23rd of this month and I want to return the favour.I need a fix and your my dealer!!!!

Hello Mr Hawley This is a ridiculous request but why the hell not...... I met your bass player after your gig in Holmfirth back in October 2009 - we had a really nice chat about working away from home a lot and how crap it is! And a chat with one of your roadies about running! My partner -soon to be husband - Jonathan (a drummer) - has been in the recording studio at Yellow Arch with his band - The Janskys - with Colin Eliot. Jonathan and I absolutley love your song "Open Up Your Door" - and I just wondered - if you have nothing better to do on Saturday 3 July 2010 - then would you come play it for us at our wedding in Bradfiield Village Hall- which as I'm sure you know - is one of the most beautfiful parts of Sheffield. It's taken a long time and lot of hardwork for Jonathan and I to get to this point - it's going to be the best day of our lives - and if you and your band are at a loose end at about 5pm on Saturday 3 July - then why not make two very happy people even happier! I think I've listened to it a gizillion times while trying to find the words for this email! We will play it anyway - whatever happens! lots love Katie

I am writing this now up in the bedroom, sculking away from the missus who is heavily pregnant and hormonal (in other words, she doesn't wanna know me right now). Still waiting for Truelove's Gutter to arrive (delayed thanks to Easter) and needed a fix, so listened to Open Up The Door and For Your Lover Give Some Time. I had a bit of a cry and, after realising I was using my late father handkerchief, cried some more. Richard's music soothed me. I had been unable to weep as it seemed self indulgent but Richard drew it out of me. Thanks a bunch pal!!! Anyway, came here, had a browse, read some stuff, felt the compunction to write something here: that's it. Next step: wait for the storm to subside and contemplate a new baby (Oliver) and buying some of Richard's early Setanta stuff (and maybe Longpig's Mobile Home as i've got The Sun Is Often Out already!) Keep making the music, Richard

Heard you on radio 4 talking about how you would like to do a gig on a boat. How about a gig from a boat? I sail an old small yacht in the Humber and I often see the old sailing barges cruising about. Your music is so ethereal, we often listen to it as the light fades over the water. A gig from these barges playing to the shore would be ace. I think that there are four historic barges one Sheffield class and the others Humber Keels. Your music drifting over the water - wonderful. Mind you how would you make brass out of it is anyones guess!

Uniquely, it has the courage to report on the daily human rights atrocities occurring in China that the vast majority of Western media scarcely touch. The HD 24/7 English language channel is being launched later this year. I am involved with the London bureau in producing a weekly music program. This will focus on authentic, meaningful artists. I have encouraged the production team to travel to Sheffield next month for the epic "Sharrow Lantern Carnival" as a light, heart-warming story for the daily World News. Hi Richard I'm Nev Mayor's brother. I remember coming down to St Cuthberts many many years ago and listening to your Dad, Nev and Eric playing their often beat up acoustics and singing some pretty wild lyrics while Nev blew like fury on his gob iron in the corner of a room while havin a few beers and fags. I play a bit but not like Nev! I work with people who have mental health problems in Sheffield and have recently started to plan a community music group using Stag Works Sound Studious on John Street. Many musicians in Sheffield have fallen ill over their lifetimes, suffering a multitude of mental illnesses which has affected their confidence to perform or even play. However, I'm encouraging musicians who use mental health services to pick up on their talents and instruments and join us in attempting to establish a unique Sheffield Music Scene to explore their potential and help many on the road to recovery. I've been staggered at the response so far. If I were to publicise this project more, I would be inundated and overwhelmed with interested musicians and budding musicians. I will be applying for funding to get this project up and running. Eventually, the project will be led by the musicians themselves. If I manage to secure the funding, I will be planning to launch the project in the summer. The project would really appreciate it if you were to come to the launch day event. If you give Nev the nod, I'll be delighted. If you are unable, thats no problem as I know you'll be really busy. Keep up the brilliant art of writing and playing. Can't stop playing 'The Ocean'! Best Wishes. Nev's little brother, Will

i'm listening now to 'truelove's gutter' it's one of the best albumns i've ever heard-the accoustic tone is mellow and soulful with depth and clarity , lyrically it's a journey out of darkness without being depressing! The accoustics are reminiscent of the older folk music of the 60's/70's and it somehow transports you back to an earlier passage of time, away from the stress of modern living-it really is a beautifully crafted albumn.
